The nation's top law enforcement position changed hands on Thursday when President Trump fired Attorney General Pam Bondi — a move that raises fresh questions about the direction of the Justice Department and who will lead it next. The dismissal marks the second cabinet departure in just a matter of weeks, signaling continued turbulence at the highest levels of the administration.
Trump announced the firing through a social media post, confirming that Bondi's deputy, Todd Blanche, would step in as interim attorney general. The president struck a cordial tone in the announcement, leaving the door open for Bondi's next chapter.
"We love Pam, and she will be transitioning to a much needed and important new job in the private sector, to be announced at a date in the near future," Mr. Trump wrote.
Bondi, 60, served as attorney general for approximately 14 months. Her tenure was marked by persistent pressure from the White House to use the Justice Department to pursue investigations against political opponents — even in cases where federal prosecutors cautioned there was insufficient evidence to move forward.
Reports indicate that Trump had been privately expressing frustration with Bondi for months, particularly over her management of files related to Jeffrey Epstein and her inability to successfully prosecute individuals the president considered political adversaries.
A Department Reshaped Under Bondi
During her time leading the Justice Department, Bondi faced criticism over the erosion of the agency's traditional independence. Career officials — many with years of experience in public corruption and national security cases — departed in significant numbers. U.S. attorneys' offices across the country, along with key investigative units, were described as weakened and struggling with low morale as a result.
Bondi becomes the second cabinet member to exit the administration in recent weeks. Earlier, Trump removed Kristi Noem from her position as secretary of homeland security.
With Blanche now stepping into the role on an interim basis, attention will quickly turn to who Trump nominates as a permanent replacement and what priorities will define the Justice Department going forward.
